ANG ALAMAT NG EDUCATED FILIPINO: KAILANGAN PA BANG I-MEMORIZE YAN?

Education at present, is one of the foremost problem of our country, poor education system affects the poor Filipinos in these very old-style and archaic education principles. The government is all blind about the real dilemma that affects the young students who had nothing in mind but to finish their studies and help their family.

It’s been about 60 plus years since we got our own independence from those countries who ruled us for years, decades and centuries. Have we met our future? Did we make any importance to all the things that our heroes fight for just to get our freedom? What about the values of a true genuine Filipino, are we really worth dying for?

It’s time for a change, Filipinos and the government should not be afraid of changes as it will always be a part of an improvement, there is no country that has progressed without any major changes made.

In this article, let’s take a look on how to improve the current education system of the Philippines.

First, we need to know the focal problem in education; a lot of graduate students has become unemployed or have been employed in an industry that is not related on their course.

The best thing to solve this is to get to the root and identify the core problem, which I think is the “deprived and ineffective education structure”. With this core problem, we can spot the key factors that could at least help improve the current education system, if not solve.

Delete all Minor Subjects in College

Having too many subjects in a semester will surely affect the performance of a student, there are schools who offers 29 units per semester and I even experience to take 35 units when I was still in college, my friend take 39 units, who’s got 50?. Students will surely go crazy over these subjects on how to manage their time in handling very demanding subjects, plus the fact, if you are in a school who offers trimestral set-up, that’s about an average of 29 units in three months.

Now, how can we solve this? Simple, to solve is to change, and when I say change, it should be a major change! Take a risk, without this step, there’s no way we can solve this problem.

By trying to make a solution, we should get to be more on the practical side, “what should be” and “what should be not”.

I suggest that we should delete all minor subjects in college, with this change; students will have a good pace and will be able to concentrate on their major subjects, which we all know are more important and more relevant to their course, especially in a class that involves technical skills. Students can save and have more time in developing their expertise with regards to their course.

You’re employer will not ask you, who kills Magellan if you are applying for a computer programmer position, or neither the employer will ask, what is the square root of 2 for a hotel position applicant. Don’t worry if you forget the physics formula while assisting the doctor in giving birth to a mother, think… this makes no sense. We didn’t practically use all of these in our profession.

Transfer all Necessary Minor Subjects in High school program

Just because, I suggest to erase all the minor subjects means that this is not important in my views, of course, minor subjects also has a significance in our life and career as it helps to develop our analytical and critical thinking skills, aside from giving us useful knowledge, which we can use in the future for certain reasons and situations.

Incorporating college minor subjects to high school program could be a great idea for a change, remember, high school students from other countries are already taking up most of our college minor subjects, so why shouldn’t we? In this way, we can compete to their advanced curriculum which is the demand of the current situation.

As time goes on, we can see the progress on the abilities of our high school students, if we don’t make a change, we can no longer have a chance, we should aim more, to get more; take it.

“Teach, Show and Involve” Methodology for Elementary Students

Elementary education is the foundation of the knowledge of each student, correct… but what about the skills? Aside from teaching our young generation the basics of education, we should also practice them to get involve into different behavioral activities to unleash the talent and expand their true potential in a certain area of discipline. Knowledge may come, but skills don’t, it’s a talent and I believe all Filipino children have the right to know where they belong.

Take this Quote:

“Teach me and I may know,

Show me and I might learn,

But try to involve me, and I will surely understand”

There’s no doubt that we teach our elementary students the basics of education, but teaching 50 to 65 students in a class doesn’t have an assurance that they will all understand the lesson, some might know it, but only 25% of the class will understand.

Showing visuals and examples, is also a good technique to impart the knowledge to our young children, showing them how to do a certain thing makes it more easier for children to learn, but let us all remember that not all students are equal, there will still be about 50% of them who may not appreciate and understand the lesson as most of the children is affected by ADHD.

So what’s the solution? Don’t just teach and show visuals or examples, try to involve them. Teaching a direct one plus one equals two is okay, showing them how the result became two by having a visual example is a nice idea, but involving them to make their own mathematical problem and ask their classmates to solve it and vice versa could be a great thing. Basic.

It’s not an obligation; it’s just a matter of responsibility that we need to give to each of our young students, response + ability = responsibility, we have to test their “ability” to “response” in each kind of situations that we gave them. With this, they will know the value of learning and as we go along, understanding will follow, it may not be a walk in the park, but with a combination of determination and perseverance, success will not be a long shot. Try to involve me and I will surely understand 100%.
